Clovis Residents Can Seek Relief at Mall During Extreme Heat Events

Sierra Vista Mall will once again serve as a cooling center for Clovis residents during periods of extreme heat through a partnership with the city of Clovis and the Clovis Fire Department.

The mall, located at 1050 Shaw Ave., will be open to residents seeking relief on any day the National Weather Service forecasts temperatures of 105 degrees or higher in Clovis.

Residents may use the cooling center Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 6 p.m. Residents will have access to an air-conditioned environment and complimentary water available at the customer service booth. Non-service animals are not permitted inside the mall.

The city also announced that Clovis Transit will provide rides to the mall at no cost.

Residents can reach the location using Stageline’s Green Route or the Round Up service.

Clovis Officials Urge Precaution

City officials urged residents to take precautions during extreme heat events, including limiting strenuous outdoor activities, wearing lightweight and light-colored clothing, maintaining proper hydration, and eating fruits and vegetables to help regulate body temperature.

Officials also encouraged residents to check twice daily on elderly, medically fragile, or otherwise at-risk friends and family members during periods of extreme heat.

Pet owners were reminded to bring animals indoors during the hottest parts of the day, provide fresh water and shade, and never leave pets in parked vehicles.

People with epilepsy, heart, kidney or liver disease, those on fluid-restricted diets, or those with conditions involving fluid retention should consult a physician before significantly increasing fluid intake, according to the city.
