Fresno Police Plan Bicycle, Pedestrian Safety Operation Saturday
The Fresno Police Department will conduct a bicycle and pedestrian safety operation Saturday aimed at reducing dangerous driving behaviors that put people walking and biking at risk.
The operation is scheduled for from noon to 10 p.m. and will focus on violations including speeding, illegal turns, failure to yield, or provide the right of way to bicyclists and pedestrians, and failure to stop for signs and signals.
Police encouraged pedestrians to use crosswalks when available, remain alert to approaching vehicles and avoid entering the path of traffic unexpectedly. Officials noted that at 30 mph, a driver needs at least 90 feet to stop.
Drivers were urged to follow posted speed limits, slow down at intersections, avoid blocking crosswalks while making right turns and never drive impaired.
The department also reminded bicyclists to obey traffic laws, use hand signals and lights at night, wear helmets and travel in the same direction as traffic.
Cyclists were advised to avoid riding too closely to parked cars and to yield to pedestrians in marked and unmarked crosswalks.
Funding for the operation is provided through a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety via the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
