Fresno Police Arrest Suspected Shooter After Tower District Gunfire
A 27-year-old Fresno man was arrested in connection with a shooting in Fresno’s Tower District that left one man wounded early Sunday, according to the Fresno Police Department.
Police said officers responded around 12:40 a.m. Sunday to the area of Olive and Linden avenues following reports of gunfire and two Shot Spotter activations indicating multiple rounds had been fired.
Officers working nearby found a 32-year-old man suffering from a single gunshot wound to the leg. Police said officers provided first aid before the victim was taken to a hospital by emergency medical services with injuries described as non-life-threatening.
An adult woman in the area also suffered minor injuries after running from the gunfire, falling and being stepped on during the incident, police said.
Investigators said Central District Safety Team officers saw a vehicle leaving the area at a high rate of speed and attempted a traffic stop. The vehicle fled eastbound on Highway 180, where police said a firearm was thrown from the vehicle.
Fresno police air support tracked the vehicle to the area of Kona and Beck avenues, where passengers abandoned the vehicle and ran away on foot. Officers later located and arrested three people, and the discarded firearm was recovered from the highway, according to police.
Felony Assault detectives later interviewed witnesses and reviewed security video from the area, leading investigators to identify Charles Muhammad, 27, of Fresno as the suspected shooter. Police said Muhammad was one of the passengers who fled from the vehicle.
Muhammad was arrested on several felony charges, including assault with a deadly weapon involving a firearm and multiple firearm-related charges.
He was booked into the Fresno County Jail, police said.
