Fresno Police Arrest 2 After Robbery, Helicopter Chase Ends in Crash

Fresno police arrested two suspects after a robbery Tuesday night led to a pursuit involving a helicopter, a traffic collision, and multiple felony and misdemeanor charges, authorities said.

Shortly after 10:30 p.m. police responded to a report of a robbery near Belmont and Fowler avenues. The victim reported being assaulted by two suspects who stole a wallet and backpack. The suspects then fled in a 2004 silver Honda Accord.

Aircrew members located a vehicle matching the description in a nearby neighborhood and observed it briefly driving without headlights. The vehicle was later seen traveling east on Belmont Avenue toward Fowler Avenue, running a red light through the intersection.

Ground patrol officers attempted a traffic stop, but the vehicle failed to yield. Aircrew continued tracking the car as it drove onto Kings Canyon Avenue and was later involved in a traffic collision after running a red light at Clovis Avenue.

After the crash, the driver fled on foot. Aircrew assisted ground units in setting up a perimeter and directing officers to the suspect’s location, where the driver was detained. A passenger who remained in the vehicle was also detained.

Police said both suspects were identified as being involved in the robbery and were arrested on charges including robbery and conspiracy to commit robbery. The driver also faces charges of misdemeanor evading, drug DUI, misdemeanor hit and run, and driving without a valid driver’s license. Police did not provide names, ages, or hometowns for the driver and passenger.

Fresno police said aircrew and patrol officers remain committed to public safety and apprehending individuals who victimize community members.
