Fresno Growth Debate Turns Heated After Public Outburst at City Hall

A Fresno City Council discussion about economic development and growth on Thursday erupted into a profanity-laced outburst after city leaders criticized opposition to planned expansion projects in southeast Fresno.

During a public conversation, Councilmember Mike Karbassi and Mayor Jerry Dyer defended proposed industrial and housing growth, arguing lawsuits and political opposition have slowed job creation and investment in the city.

“We live in an era where every time we want to relocate a major tax producer or open a new business or attract businesses, we’re getting sued left and right,” Karbassi said. “It makes it really difficult to create jobs.”

Job Killers: Dyer

Moreover, Dyer pointed to recent opposition to development plans in southeast Fresno, including a proposal involving more than 1,500 acres designated for research and advanced manufacturing.

“They voted against 1,547 acres of research and development land being opened up for advanced manufacturing jobs in our city,” Dyer said. “Those are job killers.”

The mayor criticized opponents as “uninformed people making uninformed decisions,” while Karbassi argued that blocking development also hurts investment in west Fresno neighborhoods by slowing construction of housing, roads, parks and commercial projects.

Growth Opponent: ‘You’re F***ing Wrong’

As Karbassi concluded by saying while being booed, “You’re not creating jobs. We are,” someone in the audience shouted, “You’re f***ing wrong.”

Karbassi responded, “Good luck with that.”

The exchange highlighted growing tensions in Fresno over development, housing expansion, and the balance between economic growth and community concerns.
