Fresno County Fiery Crash Leaves One Dead Near Hume Lake

A driver was killed Thursday morning after a vehicle crashed and caught fire near Hume Lake in eastern Fresno County, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The crash was reported at about 9:30 a.m. after the CHP Fresno Communications Center received a report of a loud explosion and smoke in the area of Hume Lake Road, south of Highway 180.

Sequoia National Forest dispatchers advised responding personnel that a vehicle was involved. Emergency responders found a burned Toyota sedan with a deceased occupant inside.

A preliminary investigation found the unidentified driver was traveling southbound on Hume Lake Road when, for reasons still under investigation, the vehicle veered off the east side of the roadway and crashed head-on into a rock embankment. The impact caused the vehicle to catch fire, and it became fully engulfed in flames.

The driver died at the scene.

Investigators said it is unknown whether the driver was affiliated with Hume Lake Christian Camps, which is currently in session. Alcohol and drugs have not been ruled out as contributing factors.

The crash remains under investigation.
