Central California Blood Center Urges O-Negative Donations as Supply Drops Below One Day

The Central California Blood Center is issuing an urgent appeal Tuesday for O-negative blood donors after supplies fell to less than a one-day inventory, creating what officials say is a critical shortage across the region.

O-negative blood is considered the universal blood type and is used in life-threatening emergencies when there is no time to determine a patient’s blood type. It is essential for trauma patients, emergency surgerie,s and infants in neonatal intensive care units.

The center said immediate donations are needed to ensure local hospitals can continue providing lifesaving care when demand is high.

“Our O-negative blood inventory has reached a critical level, with less than a one-day supply remaining,” said Christine Hayes, president and CEO of the Central California Blood Center. “This blood type is vital for emergency situations and for babies receiving care in NICUs. We urgently need eligible O-negative donors to donate now.”
