The Trump administration has asked Katie Zacharia to serve as the new permanent White House Press Secretary, which would fill a role vacated by Caroline Leavitt at the end of August.

An administration official confirmed to Scripps News that Zacharia had been offered the job on Friday afternoon. She is the first person to have been offered the job, the official said.

Neither Zacharia nor the White House have issued any further comment so far.

Zacharia is a conservative commentator and also briefly served as spokeswoman for former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. Noem left that role at the end of March.

Zacharia currently works for Trump Media and Technology Group, the company that operates the Truth Social media platform.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
