The Rockies unveiled a 15-foot 800-pound statue of Hall of Famer Larry Walker outside Coors Field on Sunday

The Rockies unveiled a statue of Hall of Famer Larry Walker outside Coors Field on Sunday, honoring one of their greatest players of all time.

Walker was the 1997 NL MVP, won seven Gold Gloves, three batting titles, and was a five-time All Star.

Rockies president Walker Monfort introduced Walker to the crowd, saying, He helped put Rockies baseball on the map. This statue is our way of ensuring that future generations, when they walk into Coors Field, will know his story and appreciate what he did for this franchise.

Walker said he was overwhelmed to be honored by the Rockies and was at a loss for words on how much this means to him and his family.

To have a statue outside of this ballpark, thats an honor thats pretty tough to put into words, Walker said. When I came here, my job was to keep moving hit the ball, run the bases, chase fly balls in the gap, do anything I could to help us win. And now, here I am, frozen in bronze. I guess thats a way to slow me down.

Walker is the first Rockies player to be honored with a statue outside Coors Field. Fellow Rockies Hall of Famer Todd Helton will join him when his statue is unveiled on Sept. 19.

The statue is a pose from Walker's walk-off home run against the Braves in 1999. It was created by George and Mark Lundeen of Lundeen Sculptures of Loveland, Col.

Walker thanked the Rockies fans and ended his speech saying, "Thank you, I love you all." The fans gathered to watch gave him a loud and rousing ovation. Walker then threw out the first pitch before the Guardians and Rockies game, with his fellow Canadian Hall of Famer Ferguson Jenkins playing catcher.
