San Luis Obispo County Deputy-Involved Shooting in Nipomo Leaves Man Dead

A man was shot and killed by deputies following a family disturbance call Sunday in Nipomo, according to the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies were called Sunday to the 700 block of Hill Street after receiving a report that an adult male inside an apartment was threatening to kill his mother. The apartment was also shared by the suspect’s grandmother.

When deputies arrived, they met the suspect at the doorway of the ground-floor apartment. Authorities said the man turned back inside, armed himself with a shotgun, and pointed it at deputies.

The suspect fired his shotgun at deputies, and deputies returned fire, striking him, according to authorities.

The man died at the scene. No deputies were injured.

The suspect was identified as Joseph Munoz, 48, who had no known address but frequently stayed in Nipomo. Authorities said Munoz had prior convictions including felony domestic battery, felony DUI, felony possession of a controlled substance for sale, and voluntary manslaughter, for which he served approximately 12 years in prison.

The deputies involved have been placed on paid administrative leave in accordance with department policy and are receiving support services.
