Russian President Vladimir Putin has imposed security measures in the Kremlin amid fears of a coup or assassination attempt, according to a report compiled by an intelligence agency from a European Union country and published by the investigative outlet Important Stories, the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project shared.
The document says the Kremlin has been on “high alert” since March 2026 over fears of a plot against Putin, including possible drone attacks by members of Russia’s political elite.
It names Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu as a “potential destabilizing actor.”
The report also describes sweeping restrictions on Kremlin staff and heightened surveillance as Russia faces economic strain and setbacks in Ukraine.
