Porterville Police to Hold DUI Checkpoint Friday Night

The Porterville Police Department will conduct a driving under the influence checkpoint on Friday from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. at an undisclosed location.

Checkpoint locations are selected based on data showing incidents of impaired driving-related crashes. Police said the primary purpose of the checkpoint is to improve public safety by removing suspected impaired drivers from the road.

The department reminded the public that impairment is not limited to alcohol. Some prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs can interfere with driving, and while medicinal and recreational marijuana are legal, driving under the influence of marijuana is illegal.

According to police, drivers charged with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended driver’s license.

The checkpoint is funded through a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety via the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
