Porterville Police Department to Hold DUI Checkpoint Friday
The Porterville Police Department will conduct a DUI checkpoint on Friday from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. at an undisclosed location.
Police said DUI checkpoint locations are selected based on data showing incidents of impaired driving-related crashes. The primary purpose of the checkpoints is to promote public safety by removing suspected impaired drivers from the road.
The department reminded the public that impaired driving is not limited to alcohol. Officials noted that some prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs may interfere with driving ability. They also said that while medicinal and recreational marijuana are legal, driving under the influence of marijuana remains illegal.
Drivers charged with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, along with a suspended license, according to the department.
Funding for the checkpoint program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
