Newsom Faces $31,500 Fine From California Political Finance Watchdog

The California Fair Political Practices Commission is proposing a $31,500 fine for Gov. Gavin Newsom for allegedly failing to file 18 behested payment reports on time.

Under state law, politicians must report when they solicit contributions, known as behested payments, from outside entities for charities or governmental purposes.

CalMatters Exposes Lack of Disclosure

In June of last year, CalMatters published an investigative report into how, at Newsom’s request, the nonprofit California Forward “paid former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa more than $380,000 to advise the governor for about 10 months on how to overhaul California’s approach to major infrastructure projects.”

Reported CalMatters: ” Under state law, Newsom had to disclose that he asked California Forward to pay Villaraigosa.”

A hearing on the matter is scheduled for Thursday, June 18, at the FPPC headquarters in Sacramento.

Representing the state watchdog will be Alex Rose, the commission counsel, and special investigator Paul Rasey.

Gavin’s representative at the hearing is scheduled to be attorney Tom Willis of Olson Remcho, LLP.
