Netanyahu Coalition Faces Collapse Over Ultra-Orthodox Draft Dispute

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s governing coalition appeared near collapse Tuesday after an ultra-Orthodox coalition partner called for parliament to dissolve over military draft disputes, NPR reported. 

Israeli media reported new elections could be held as early as September.

The crisis erupted after Netanyahu reportedly told ultra-Orthodox leaders he would not advance legislation exempting their community from military service before elections.

Israel’s Supreme Court last year ordered the government to draft ultra-Orthodox Israelis amid pressure for more soldiers during the Gaza war.

Former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett and opposition leader Yair Lapid are seeking to unseat Netanyahu in potential elections.
