Israeli Strikes Hit Beirut as Tensions With Hezbollah and Iran Escalate
Israeli forces launched strikes on Beirut on Sunday, targeting what the military described as Hezbollah infrastructure, according to The Associated Press.
Smoke was seen rising over the Lebanese capital following the attacks.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said the strikes were carried out in response to Hezbollah attacks in northern Israel.
The latest escalation comes a week after Israeli strikes on Beirut’s suburbs prompted retaliatory attacks by Iran. Tehran, Hezbollah’s main backer, has said any U.S.-Iran ceasefire agreement must include an end to Israeli military operations in Lebanon. Hezbollah fired missiles into Israel on March 2, further intensifying regional tensions.
