Fresno Traffic Stop Leads to DUI and Child Endangerment Arrest

A 28-year-old woman was arrested on multiple charges Thursday night after an attempted traffic stop escalated into a brief struggle with officers and an investigation into suspected driving under the influence, according to the Fresno Police Department.

According to Fresno police, at approximately 7:58 p.m. an officer was patrolling near Blackstone and Belmont avenues when a gray sedan narrowly missed the patrol vehicle, moved into the number two lane, and made a westbound turn from that lane, cutting off the officer’s ability to safely turn. The officer attempted a traffic stop after observing what police described as an unsafe turning movement.

Police said the vehicle accelerated, made a sudden southbound turn into an alley west of North Calaveras Street, and then stopped behind a residence. The driver exited the vehicle, walked away, and began yelling.

When the officer attempted to detain her, the driver allegedly resisted, forcing the officer to take her to the ground. While on the ground, she struck the officer under the left arm and kicked the officer’s inner leg while resisting handcuffing, police said.

Officers later determined the driver was allegedly under the influence of alcohol. Three children were also in the vehicle at the time. Police said all three children exited the car while the driver continued to resist arrest, and the youngest child repeatedly attempted to position himself between the officer and his mother. The officer pushed the child back to keep him safe, according to police.

The driver, identified as Charquivia Roberson, 28, was arrested on suspicion of child endangerment, resisting an executive officer, resisting arrest, unsafe turning, and driving under the influence of alcohol.

She was transported and booked into the Fresno County Jail.
