Fresno Police Issue 124 Citations in Distracted Driving Crackdown

The Fresno Police Department issued 124 citations to drivers for violating California’s hands-free cell phone law during a distracted driving enforcement operation on Friday.

California has prohibited drivers from holding a phone or other electronic device while operating a vehicle since 2008. The law bans activities such as talking, texting or using apps while holding a device.

Drivers caught using a handheld phone face a fine. A second violation within 36 months of a prior conviction for the same offense results in a point added to the driver’s record.

Officials urge motorists to pull over to a safe parking spot if they need to make an important call or program directions. Drivers are also encouraged to silence their phones or place them out of reach before starting a trip.

The enforcement effort was funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
