Fresno Police Cite 113 Drivers in Distracted Driving Enforcement Operation
Fresno police cited 113 drivers for violating California’s hands-free cell phone law during a distracted driving enforcement operation conducted Friday.
California law prohibits drivers from holding a cellphone or other electronic device while driving. The restriction applies to talking on the phone, texting and using apps while behind the wheel.
A handheld cellphone violation is punishable by a fine. A second conviction for the same offense within 36 months results in a point being added to a driver’s record.
Police urged drivers who need to make an important call or enter directions into a device to pull over in a safe parking location before using their phones. Drivers are also encouraged to silence their phones or place them out of reach before starting a trip.
The enforcement effort was funded through a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, administered through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
