Fresno Police Arrest Man Accused of Choking Girlfriend, Attacking Officers
A Fresno man was arrested Wednesday after police said he assaulted his girlfriend during a domestic disturbance and later resisted officers attempting to take him into custody.
Officers with the Fresno Police Department’s Central Police District were dispatched at about 5:17 p.m. to a reported domestic disturbance, according to police.
Police said officers contacted the victim outside the residence. The woman told officers her boyfriend, identified as Arthur Michael Lopez, became aggressive while under the influence of alcohol. The victim and Lopez live together, police said.
According to police, Lopez pushed the victim and prevented her from leaving a room. Officers said Lopez pinned the victim to a bed by holding both of her wrists above her head, causing visible injury to her right wrist.
Police said Lopez also placed pressure on the front of the victim’s neck with both hands formed into fists.
The victim told officers she was unable to breathe, and officers observed redness on the right side of her neck, according to police.
Suspect Tries to Assault Officers, Fresno Police Said
When officers arrived, they attempted to detain Lopez while investigating the incident, police said. Officers gave Lopez multiple lawful commands to stop and sit down, but he refused and tried to push past them, police said.
Police said Lopez was taken to the ground and handcuffed. While restrained, he repeatedly attempted to get up and leave the scene and had to be physically restrained by officers.
While being escorted to a patrol vehicle for transport to the Fresno County Jail, Lopez became combative and attempted to strike officers, police said. Officers said Lopez also headbutted fence boards and again had to be taken to the ground because he was trying to get out of the handcuffs.
During the drive to jail, police said Lopez kicked the patrol vehicle’s windows and repeatedly headbutted the windows despite officers ordering him to stop.
Lopez was booked into the Fresno County Jail on domestic violence-related charges and charges related to resisting arrest and assaulting officers, police said.
