Fresno Man Identified in Fatal Head-On Crash
The Fresno County Sheriff-Coroner’s Office on Tuesday identified a man killed in a head-on crash involving a Freightliner tractor and a pickup truck as Alfonso Ventura, 39, of Fresno.
The crash happened about 5:30 a.m. Monday on Manning Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol Fresno Area office.
Investigators said a Freightliner tractor pulling an empty trailer was traveling eastbound when a Toyota Tundra was traveling westbound in the eastbound lane for reasons that remain under investigation.
Authorities said the Freightliner driver attempted to swerve left to avoid a collision, but the front of the Toyota struck the front of the truck head-on.
Following the collision, the Freightliner went out of control and came to rest in a grape vineyard north of Manning Avenue. The Toyota overturned, became fully engulfed in flames and landed on its side in the westbound lane. The Toyota driver was ejected and came to rest on the roadway east of the vehicle.
The Fresno County Fire Protection District and emergency medical personnel responded and pronounced Ventura dead at the scene.
The Freightliner driver suffered minor injuries and was taken to a hospital. CHP said the driver is cooperating with investigators and was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Authorities said it remains unknown whether drugs or alcohol were factors for Ventura. Toxicology results are pending, and the crash remains under investigation.
