Fresno County Head-On Crash Leaves One Dead
One person was killed early Monday morning in a head-on crash involving a tractor-trailer and a pickup truck east of Chateau Fresno, according to the California Highway Patrol Fresno Area.
CHP officers responded at approximately 5:30 a.m. to Manning Avenue, where investigators say a Freightliner tractor pulling an empty trailer was traveling eastbound while a Toyota Tundra was traveling westbound in the eastbound lane for reasons still under investigation.
Authorities said the Freightliner driver attempted to swerve left to avoid a collision, but the front of the Toyota struck the front of the truck head-on.
After the impact, the Freightliner veered out of control and came to rest in a grape vineyard north of Manning Avenue. The Toyota overturned, became fully engulfed in flames, and landed on its side in the westbound lane. The Toyota driver was ejected and came to rest on the roadway east of the vehicle.
The Fresno County Fire Protection District and emergency medical personnel responded and pronounced the Toyota driver dead at the scene. The Freightliner driver suffered minor injuries and was transported to a hospital. Officials said he is cooperating with investigators and was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
CHP said it is still unknown whether drugs or alcohol were factors for the Toyota driver. Toxicology results are pending and the crash remains under investigation.
