Four Cited in Madera Police Tobacco Decoy Operation
Four people were cited during a tobacco decoy operation conducted by the Madera Police Department aimed at preventing minors from gaining access to tobacco products.
Police said an undercover juvenile participated in the operation by standing outside seven mini-marts and gas stations throughout Madera and asking adults to purchase tobacco products on their behalf, a practice commonly known as “shoulder tapping.”
According to the department, four adults agreed to buy tobacco products for the underage decoy and were cited.
Police also thanked the numerous people who declined the requests and walked away, calling their actions an important contribution to protecting youth in the community.
The department said providing tobacco products to minors is illegal and contributes to juvenile nicotine addiction.
