Democrats Are Recruiting Canvassers 'With Previous Felony Convictions' To Knock on Doors for Abdul El-Sayed, Other Dems, in Get-Out-the-Vote Push
Democratic political groups and their consultants—including those supporting Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed—are recruiting canvassers with "previous felony convictions" to knock on voters' doors in Michigan, Kansas, Ohio, and other battleground states, according to job listings reviewed by the Washington Free Beacon.
Unity & Justice Fund, a group supporting left-wing Democrat El-Sayed in Michigan, the Outreach Team, a Democratic consulting firm working for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, and Planned Parenthood have posted job ads across the country that "strongly" encourage people from "underrepresented groups" to apply for the canvasser gigs.
The desirable demographics include black people, indigenous people, women, LGBTQIA+ community members, and "people with previous felony convictions," according to the job ads. "We are committed to equity, inclusion, and anti-racism."
Duties include conducting "door to door contact" and having "one-on-one conversations" with voters in their homes and at public events. Hourly wages range from $22 to $27, with bonuses available for some gigs.
The get-out-the-vote effort is critical in the final days of close statewide races like the Michigan Senate contest, which could determine the balance of power in Washington, D.C. Campaigns and political organizations rely heavily on canvassers to turn out voters they have identified as likely supporters. Campaigns provide canvassers with voters' names, addresses, and party affiliation—information provided by most states.

It could raise concerns that Democrats are sending people with felony records to voters' doorsteps to help turn out the vote.
The job applications, which are posted on Indeed, CareerBuilder, and other job boards, do not identify any felonies that would disqualify canvassers. It is also unclear whether the consultants conduct any criminal history background checks on applicants. Applicants are required to be authorized to work in the United States, the posts state.
The groups aiming to hire ex-cons have spent millions of dollars on canvassers in battleground Senate and House races across the country, according to campaign finance disclosures.
In Michigan, Unity & Justice Fund has paid $435,698 to the consulting firm Chase & Porter for canvassing work in Detroit to support El-Sayed.
"We are building teams of dedicated, part time canvassers across Michigan to educate, engage, and mobilize our communities around our endorsed candidates for the upcoming 2026 general election," the job ad states.
Chase & Porter is owned by Mallak Beydoun, the chief of staff to Dearborn Heights, Mich., mayor Mo Baydoun (D.), a close ally of El-Sayed's. Unity & Justice Fund is an affiliate of CAIR Action, the political arm of the pro-Hamas Council on American-Islamic Relations. CAIR Action has donated $175,000 to Unity & Justice Fund, the Free Beacon reported.
Several prominent Democratic PACs have paid $3,467,416 to the Outreach Team for canvassing work in battleground Senate and House races, according to disclosures.
Planned Parenthood has paid the Outreach Team $300,000 to canvas for El-Sayed. For Our Future, a PAC funded heavily by labor unions, has paid $33,333 to the consulting firm to turn out the vote for El-Sayed, who is running against Republican Mike Rogers in one of the most heated Senate races in the country.
DSCC, the campaign arm of Senate Democrats, hired the Outreach Team to canvas voters in Kansas on behalf of Democratic candidate Adam Hamilton in the Kansas City suburbs, according to an ad for that job. Hamilton has mounted a strong challenge to Republican incumbent Roger Marshall.
The firm is also working to elect Dan Osborn, the Democrat-backed independent running for Senate in Nebraska who is in a close race with GOP incumbent Pete Ricketts. The job ad touts the value of canvassers showing up "on every porch, corner, driveway, sidewalk, field and farm across the state."
In Iowa, the Campaign for a Family Friendly Economy, a left-leaning group funded heavily by Bill Gates's ex-wife, Melinda French Gates, has given $256,971 to the Outreach Team to canvas in support of Iowa Democratic Senate candidate Josh Turek, who is running neck and neck with Republican Ashley Hinson. Canvassers will "engage Iowans around corporate polluter accountability, health care, big ag, affordability, and the 2026 election," the job listing states.
Planned Parenthood Votes Ohio has paid the Outreach Team $22,500 to conduct "door to door contact" for Democratic Senate candidate Sherrod Brown in his race against Republican incumbent John Husted. For Our Future, a PAC bankrolled by major labor unions, has paid the Outreach Team $111,000 to canvas for Brown.
Planned Parenthood Votes, funded in past years by George Soros and Michael Bloomberg, paid the Outreach Team $1,108,000 to canvas for North Carolina Senate candidate Roy Cooper and $93,750 in support of Florida Senate candidate Angie Nixon, who glorifies convicted cop-killers.
The Outreach Team has spent millions of dollars more on canvassers for pivotal House races in California, Iowa, Florida, and Arizona.
Planned Parenthood and Worker Power PAC, a group closely aligned with labor unions, has paid $500,000 for canvassers on behalf of California congressional candidate Marni Von Wilpert, a Democrat running to replace retiring Republican Darrell Issa.
The Outreach Team and Unity & Justice Fund did not respond to requests for comment.
