150 Pounds of Khat Seized During Merced County Traffic Stop, CHP Says

A traffic stop in Merced County led to the seizure of approximately 150 pounds of a controlled substance and the arrest of a driver, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The stop occurred Friday on northbound Highway 99 after officers observed multiple vehicle code violations, CHP said. During the stop, officers noted several indicators consistent with criminal activity.
After speaking with the driver, officers obtained consent to search the vehicle and discovered about 150 pounds of khat, authorities said.
Khat, also known as qat, is a stimulant classified as a Schedule I controlled substance in the United States. It is typically chewed and can cause effects including paranoia, hallucinations, hyperactivity, and delusions, authorities noted.
The driver admitted to selling khat and was arrested on suspicion of possession and transportation of a controlled substance, CHP said.
