President Joe Biden announced Wednesday evening that first lady Jill Biden is leading the way on education reform such as a new proposal calling for the coverage of two years of tuition at community colleges.

Biden also called for increasing Pell Grants to make education more accessible to low-income students during the joint address to Congress, and said funding should be increased for historically Black colleges, tribal colleges and minority serving institutions.

“The reason is they don’t have the endowments, but their students are just as capable of learning about cybersecurity … all the things that are going on that provide those jobs in the future,” Biden said.

Speaking on the American Families Plan, Biden noted access to good education as the first point in addressing the challenges faced by American families.

Along with increasing Pell Grants, Biden said access to 12 years of education is no longer enough for competing with the rest of the world, and guaranteed four additional years of public education in the American Families Plan.

Jill Biden smiled behind her mask as Biden mentioned her being a professor at a community college while she is also serving as first lady.

Biden brought up how she’s said before that “any country that outeducates us is gonna outcompete us.”

“She’ll be deeply involved in leading this effort, thank you Jill,” Biden said, as the chamber applauded.
