Clovis Police to Hold Thursday Night DUI Checkpoint
Clovis police will conduct a driving under the influence checkpoint on Thursday in an effort to reduce impaired driving crashes, authorities said.
The Clovis Police Department said the checkpoint will run from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. at an undisclosed location. Officials said checkpoint sites are chosen based on data showing incidents of impaired driving-related crashes.
The primary purpose of the operation is to promote public safety by removing suspected impaired drivers from the road.
Police noted that impairment is not limited to alcohol, and that some prescription and over-the-counter medications can affect driving. Officials also said driving under the influence of marijuana is illegal, even though medicinal and recreational use is legal.
Drivers convicted of a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, along with a suspended license. Funding for the checkpoint comes from a California Highway Patrol Cannabis Tax Grant Program.
